Right ‘contacts’ keep Kacheguda ACP going

This man is perpetually in the midst of a controversy but with godfathers at the right places, he has been going from strength to strength. In the latest, Kacheguda ACP Kakani Ramachandran has been named by the Press Coubcil of India as one of the cops responsible for the police mayhem on media personnel and students on the Osmania University campus on February 14 and 15. Journalists were ruthlessly beaten and cops set fire to a scribe’s scooter. Ramachandran has also been named by the police department’s own inquiry in the matter conducted by CID. The report was submitted to the director general of police Girish Kumar on Tuesday. 

    Girish Kumar knows Ramachandran quite well: during his tenure as the boss of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), officials had raided Ramachandran’s house. That was in November 2007 and sleuths had unearthed Rs 1.65 crore worth of alleged disproportionate assets. Ramachandran was arrested and then suspended from the service. But that was then : later he was reinstated and in July 2009, promoted and given charge as ACP with the Central Crime Station. All this courtesy the right contacts at the right places. 

    Following the violence related to Telangana agitation in the city, Ramachandran was posted in the Osmania University area. Subsequently, he was posted as ACP of Kacheguda division with Osmania University police station under its jurisdiction. 

    Ramachandran’s name cropped up in the Sheikh Sohrabuddin fake encounter case earlier. He was suspected to be one of the AP police officers who helped the Gujarat police team in picking up Sohrabuddin. Nothing is proven and an inquiry by the CBI is on. 

    R a m a ch a n - dran’s name also cropped up following the arrest of Abdul Sattar, a police informant in Petrapol, West Bengal, at the Indo-Bangladesh border in June 2009 by the BSF. Sattar claimed that he was pushed into Bangladesh by Ramachandran to gather details about Abdul Shahid Bilal and his associates. Ramachandran who joined the police force in 1985 was an inspector at the Charminar police station before the Mecca Masjid blast. Later, he was inducted into the task force of the Hyderabad police commissioner and made part of the team to unravel the blast. The investigations yielded no results but Ramachandran picked up 100 boys and subjected them to third degree treatment of the worst kind. 

    The parents of the boys complained so vehemently that it became an embarassment to the government of the day.
